Amanda Gorman Brings Hope With the Power of Poetry

Our first National Youth Poet Laureate captured our hearts and gave us hope for our country’s future with the oration of her poem, “The Hill We Climb” at Joe Biden’s and Kamala Harris’ inauguration this morning.

PBS News Hour coverage of Amanda Gorman reading her incredible poem, “The Hill We Climb.”

“Where can we find light in this never-ending shade?” she asked.

Tears continued to well in my eyes as I watched my son take in the vision of Amanda Gorman reading her incredible poem this morning. I have never felt so great about keeping him from attending school. This was a better class for him than I imagined. For him to behold such beauty, the snippets of poetry we heard throughout the morning included not only her beautiful word strings but also, “Please stand if you are able.” And, “America’s story has always been written by those who can see what can be — unburdened by what has been.” -Vice President Kamala Harris. “This is democracy’s day. A day of history and hope of renewal and resolve through a crucible for the ages.” -President Joseph Biden.

“Somehow we do it,” she almost sang out. “Somehow we weathered and witnessed a nation that isn’t broken, but simply unfinished.”

The work is never finished. We need to continue to push forward with hope, love, and yes, unity. Thank you Amanda Gorman for sharing your brilliance with the world. Thank you world for letting Amanda Gorman’s star shine so that it may help blast out the darkness.

Let’s all preorder Change Sings, Amanda Gorman’s first children’s book, preferably from Black-owned bookstores (Estelita’s Library in Seattle for me) for our friends and families and ourselves. Amanda Gorman also published the poetry book The One for Whom Food Is Not Enough in 2015. Let’s all buy a copy from Black-owned bookstores if we are able to!
